One of my favorite things about cooking and baking is experimenting with flavors and ingredients! In my years of experimenting with these flavors and ingredients, I have come across some really delicious recipes that use ingredients that are a bit….unexpected.

WE have an event coming up this week on Thursday called a Bock Poke. The simple question from the children and the uninitiated is “Umm, whats a bock and why do I want to poke it?” Let me explain. We will start with the bock itself.
Winter Programming
I am sick and tired of the idea that just because it is January, February or March, that there is nothing to do. I’m over it. In fact, here at the Market, I have doubled down on this notion and planned something EVERY OTHER WEEK in those months. Thursday nights are going to be event nights at the Market. We are talking board game nights, coffee classes, beer school, and more.
The Return of Beer School
When I started the Market, I very much wanted to have a space that you could enjoy the wide breadth of flavors that craft beer has to offer and still see the daylight, or even better, in the daylight! I'll be the first to admit that it was a lot harder to grow all the different parts of the business (coffee, food, retail, beer, events) all at the same time and the Market Bar took a back seat while coffee and food got their feet under them.
Post Starbucks World
The massive coffee machine that is Starbucks has come up with many great combinations of flavors and brought them to the masses. And now I have the opportunity to not only make it better than they can, but give people what they want when they order.
Start with A Why
There is a writer named Simon Sinek who has a book called Start With Why. If you find your Why, the reason you do what you do, then its easy to chart your course. So thats how I’ll start this blog. My Why.
Through the various jobs I’ve had in this community before I came to own this amazing coffee shop, one thing connected all of them. A sense of community and loving where you live. When we moved to Aberdeen in 2013, my wife and I were determined to make this community home and not wait till the next weekend we could go to Minneapolis, Fargo or Sioux Falls. There is a lot to love in this community, and many others.
When I went looking for a job, I unknowingly gravitated towards, or in some ways created, jobs where I could create experiences. Events and experiences that people could connect the fun time they are having to the community they live in.
All that to say that when we started the Market on the Plaza, more clearly than anything, I knew that I wanted it to be a space where people can connect and be proud that this place exists for them in Aberdeen SD. Maybe they were raised here, maybe a transplant, maybe just here for school, no matter the reason they can, at least for today, connect with a place or have a great experience in this place. Thats WHY we were here.
