Post Starbucks World

We have done several coffee classes now where we give people the confidence to order what they actually want to drink at the coffee shop.  Several times a day we talk people through their order to be sure they are actually getting what they want.  Gas stations sell a drink that is called a cappuccino, but isn’t.  Stores are filled with sweet bottled drinks named something the marketing department came up with instead of what it is.

Then there is the humble macchiato.  Or at least it should be humble.  Starbucks made a caramel vanilla latte one day several years ago and called it a caramel macchiato.  What a macchiato actually is supposed to be is espresso with a dollop of milk foam on top.  Can you see the problem?

So this means that we baristas have to be able to translate what the customer wants based on what Starbucks is calling it.  This goes to sizes as well.  We’ve learned what GRANDE means when someone orders it.

But you know what? It’s ok. The massive coffee machine that is Starbucks has come up with many great combinations of flavors and brought them to the masses. And now I have the opportunity to not only make it better than they can, but give people what they want when they order.

All that to say that if we question your order or clarify what you want, we are only doing it to be sure you have a great experience with your latte.  If you really want a caramel cappuccino, I will make it for you.  But I’m going to double check with you first just to ensure you get the best possible drink.

Come join us in-house this Thursday, January 12th, for the basics of everything coffee. We will cover everything from French Press to Frothing milk. Moka Pots to Mochas. Come build your coffee confidence with us. Brewing starts at 6 pm! https://www.themarketontheplaza.com/events/coffee-class
